Cash means lower growth and lower risk. Shares means higher growth potential but values can fall as well as rise.
Defaults: 3% for cash, 6% for shares. You can override this with your own assumption.

Used to show the “real” value of your money in today’s terms. Nominal is the headline pound figure; real is what it will actually buy once inflation has eaten into it.

An ISA shelters growth from tax. A General Investment Account (GIA) has no tax wrapper, so dividends and gains are taxable.

Nominal vs real — what’s the difference?

Nominal is the headline pound value of your pot at the end of the term. It’s what you’d see on a statement.

Real is the same pot expressed in today’s money, after stripping out inflation. It’s a better guide to what you could actually buy with it.

Example: £100,000 in 20 years’ time sounds like a lot, but at 3% inflation it only buys what around £55,000 buys today. Real values cut through that illusion, which is why we show both.

Important: This is an illustrative estimate, not financial advice. Returns are not guaranteed, and the value of investments can fall as well as rise. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change. Calculations assume a constant rate of return, contributions made monthly in advance, no annual CGT or dividend allowances (so GIA outcomes are slightly conservative), and no charges or fees. Always seek independent financial advice before investing.
